Hi everyone! And welcome back to Emily’s Maids! We’re back with our favorite house cleaning tips and this time, we’re giving you our summer house cleaning checklist!
We know summer started a month ago. We also understand that summer is a fresh new start, and the perfect opportunity to enjoy everything Dallas has to offer. Everywhere from the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden or the Dallas Zoo, to the Legoland Discovery Center in Dallas if you want something fun to do with your family.
So, it’s okay if you haven’t had the chance to deep clean your home! But now before the end of July may be the perfect time to deep clean your home and start summer on the right foot. Even if you clean your home regularly, you still need to deep clean your home every once in a while, and take care of areas you usually overlook.
Before we start, remember to check Emily’s Maids house cleaning service in Dallas, Texas. Our customers usually need an extra pair of hands and we’re happy to help!
Step #1 In Your House Cleaning Checklist: Organize Your Cleaning Tasks
First things first, before you start your spring cleaning (or should we say summer cleaning): organize and decide your cleaning tasks.
It’s important to decide the priorities and leave out any tasks that are not that relevant to summer, like cleaning out gutters and insulating windows.
A good cleaning schedule has specific, small tasks (around 30 minutes each) that will give you a sense of accomplishment.
Even physically crossing out each task after finishing will make you feel better and want to complete your checklist.
Pro-tip: get some inspiration from the checklists created by a professional house cleaning company or maid service. No one has their cleaning checklists more refined and tested until perfection!
Before you start, gather your cleaning supplies. Prioritize all-purpose surface cleaners and floor cleaners, and versatile supplies (e.g. microfiber cloths, mops and brushes).
Also, think of an action plan: always start from top to bottom and left to right. Doing one room at a time is what usually works for most people, but you can also organize your cleaning by task (e.g. decluttering all closets, vacuuming all floors…).
After cleaning a few times you will know the method that works best for you.
Step #2 In Your House Cleaning Checklist: Declutter
The next step is always to start by decluttering. The key here is to keep track of time you declutter, so you don’t lose momentum.
Depending on your schedule, anywhere from 1 to 4 hours is a decent amount of time to declutter and organize your items before you start cleaning.
Some good items to declutter or reorganize now that we’re in summer: coats, winter blankets, spring-related décor, and other seasonal items.
After decluttering, don’t waste time! Rest for 5 – 10 minutes and then start cleaning. Here’s a rundown of the main areas you should cover in your home!
Step #3 In Your House Cleaning Checklist: the Kitchen
If you have enough time, scrub out and reorganize all your kitchen cabinets, including washing all the canisters, baskets and shelves.
Wipe canisters and baskets with a damp cloth. If they are too greasy or dusty, you might want to soak them in hot water with a squirt of dish soap (as long as they are water-resistant).
Your shelves are probably the messiest surfaces, especially if you haven’t cleaned them in a long time. Wipe with an all-purpose cleaner and wipe again with rubbing alcohol to sanitize them and absorb soap as well.
If you have enough time, clean the space between the fridge and cabinets, or the washer and dryer.
Pro tip: use a cotton swab to clean hard-to-reach areas, like hinges and corners.

Step #4: Cleaning Outdoors to Enjoy Summer
Now that summer has officially started, it’s the best time to have some fun outdoors!
A pressure washer is a fantastic tool to help you remove grime, mold, or any buildup that you find in your backyard or deck.
If you have metal and plastic furniture, use the same pressure washer (at a proper distance) or a hose to clean it quickly.
With wood furniture, you need to mix mild detergent and warm water, and softly clean with a cloth. Work in the direction of the wood grain. Rinse with plenty of clean water. Make sure you do this on a sunny day, to allow furniture to dry properly.
Step #5: Take Care of Your Bathrooms
For obvious reasons, you will need to deep clean your bathrooms if you haven’t done so in a while.
Deep cleaning is all about the details. Clean the doors and door frames with a Lysol wipe or a microfiber cloth and spray some rubbing alcohol.
You can use an all-purpose cleaner to remove dirt and grime from light switches. You will need either a flat mop or a microfiber cloth to wipe your baseboards.
Remove the hinges of your toilet seat and clean that as well. Remember using gloves and a disposable sponge. You can also soak them in a big plastic tub or bowl with hot, soapy water.
Organize and clean your vanity sink. Usually a damp cloth with rubbing alcohol should be enough.
Last but not least, scrub your (ceramic) walls and floors with a small broom and hot soapy water, at least once a year.
Last Step In Your Summer Cleaning Checklist: Your Living Room
Your living room is the place where you spend quality time with your family. Here’s what you can do in your living room:
Vacuum your furniture and, if possible, tackle windows, walls and blinds. If you’re going to wash your windows, try to pick a day that is not too sunny nor too rainy. Excessive sun and heat can evaporate your cleaning agent. And rain makes it harder in general to wash anything from outside.
Wash your blankets and pillows. Keep in mind some of them need to be air dried.
Remember to wipe from top to bottom. And don’t forget to vacuum behind your furniture and under your couch.
